Writer's Block: Pick an era, any era

If you had to pick a time period to live in, which would you choose? Why?

View other answers

I choose now.

I'd love to have a time machine and be able to visit many different time periods. I'd like to sit in a pool with the high class people of Rome, be there for the completion of an Egyptian pyramid, attend a ball in a medieval King's court, fan myself while I chat with the ladies on a front porch of a Civil War era southern mansion, see the first gold nugget as it's being sluced from the pan in the California goldrush, sip bathtub gin in a speakeasy while wearing a flapper dress, and see Elvis live in concert.

All of those experiences excite my imagination and make me wish for a way to be a part of a different time, but those times weren't easy, especially for women. Had the miricles of modern medicine not been around when I was born I likely would not have lived long, or if I had lived I would not have been of much use until eyeglasses were invented. The amazing advances in medicine, technology and the changes just in the way we think make this the time for me to live in.

Anticipation of shopping heaven!

H&M just opened a store in the mall closest to me (NorthPoint) and I am beyone excited. I've wanted to go to this store since I first saw it on an episode of What Not to Wear. I've heard about it online and seen the great deals people have gotten on some very cute clothing. I can't wait to go!

http://www.hm.com/us/#/startpagedefault/

They also have a fun thing online called the Dressing Room where you can get your fashion personality. You can make a model IN YOUR SIZE and then dress it up!

I've had a lovely 3 day weekend.

There will be more detailed posts with pictures later, but for now, here's a summary.

Wolf and I took Friday off work. I spent the morning at the International School of Skin & Nails in Atlanta, as a celebration of meeting my first weightloss goal I'd wanted to pamper myself and I was finally able to go do it. We then went to the downtown Atlanta Fulton county courthouse and got legaly married for free, but it was a pain in the butt as most government processes are.

Saturday morning I got up at the buttcrack of dawn and walked in the Atlanta Komen Race for the Cure. It was amazing and exhausting all at the same time. Wolf and I then spent the afternoon looking at motorcycles.

Today I'm doing a bit of laundry and playing around online. My legs hurt (yesterday it was from the hip down, but now it's just from the knee down) so I'm taking it easy. Wolf's at work today, normal schedule, and so I'm going to attempt to make a pork loin roast for dinner tonight. He gave me instructions, don't worry. :)

Out of those pairs, how many do you wear more than a few times a year?

Let's see... I don't currently have a lot of shoes. Here they are in the order in which I wear them the most. Oh, and I'm not counting slippers, even ones that I might sometimes throw on to go outside in.

1. Black MaryJane style Crocs
2. Chocolate Brown ballerina style flats
3. Hot Pink Beach style Crocs
4. White boring but comfortable sneakers
5. Dark Brown, almost Black patent leather high heel ankle boots
6. Black Doc Martens with Cheetah print laces.

I really want a pair of sandles for summer, maybe in silver or black, or even tan, but I'm not having luck right now finding something nice. It seems that a lot of the sandles out right now are "gladiator" inspired and they make my feet look huge. I need more heels for work. I know I need to stop wearing the black maryjane Crocs all the time, but they are comfortable and usually blend in ok.

Looking for work in the Dallas, TX area?

I got this in today's Woot Newsletter!

Win Wages With Woot Work! Employment Open House, May 10
Even though our last employment open house was a roaring success, we're still seeking a few good Dallas-area residents to be the newest babies in our growing family. Stop by our headquarters (4121 International Parkway, Carrollton, TX 75007) on Saturday, May 10 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Be ready to fill out an application, undergo a background check, talk to our management for a few minutes, and take a test. And if you're interested in an RMA tech position, bring an appropriate resume. Last time we did this, we landed several swell peeps who are presently drawing an honest Woot paycheck. And if you can't make it, we're constantly adding new open positions to the list on our Work for Woot page. (And they're not all in Dallas - our St. Louis office is on the lookout for a designer who has created sites in Photoshop and coded them in tableless xhtml/css.) Check it out - there might just be a few bucks in it for you.

http://www.woot.com/Jobs.aspx

How to make a cat bed (or a bed for a small dog) out of a sweater.

Here's how.

 Steps

from armpit to sleeve halfway down botton sleeve edge]]Lay the sweater out flat. If it's a wool sweater, it should be felted first (see Tips). With yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch the seamed edge of the sleeve to the side of the sweater, about half way down the sleeve from where the armpit meets the side seam (shown in contrasting yarn to make the stitches more visible).

Fold the bottom edge of the sweater up and place the sleeve in front of it. You want to roll (or fold) the bottom up far enough that both sleeve cuff edges will be able to overlap slightly when place in front of it.

Secure the sleeve to the top of the rolled up sweater edge with a whip stitch or a blanket stitch. Remember that you’re going to stuff the sleeves, so be sure to stitch only through the top layer of the sleeve.

Repeat with the other sleeve. As the cuffs overlap slightly in front, put one cuff just inside of the other and stitch down the outside cuff edge along the top layer, just enough that you’ll be able to keep the stuffing inside the tube you’ve just created with the sleeves.

Make a running stitch from one “armpit” to the other. Create an arched shape to make a rounder bed. Be sure to go through both layers of sweater fabric. You should now have a “channel” that can be stuffed with batting or old rags (or strips of old sweaters). Stuff until you get a sausage-like ring. If you want to pad the bottom, now is the time to do that as well.

Stitch the neck opening closed. Give it to your favorite kitty/puppy and consider making another to donate to your local pet shelter. It took more time to post this than to make the bed, if that tells you how quick and easy this project is!

 Tips

To felt a wool sweater, first make sure sweater is at least 80% wool. The larger the sweater, the better, for it shrinks. Wash in HOT water (top loading machines only -- go ahead and throw some towels or jeans in with it for extra agitation) and lay flat to dry. Felting is not absolutely necessary, but it makes the fabric stronger and longer-lasting. If the sweater is acrylic, just skip the felting process. Wool is much warmer, though, if that's a consideration.

 Things You'll Need

A large old sweater, preferably 100% wool (found cheaply at thrift stores)

Polyester or cotton batting or old rags for stuffing

Yarn

Tapestry needle

Scissors

 Related wikiHows

How to Communicate With Your Cat

How to Show Affection to a Cat

How to Foster an Abandoned Cat

How to Tell if a Cat Is Pregnant

How to Trim Your Cat's Nails

 Sources and Citations

http://knuts4knits.wordpress.com/ - February 2007 archives; original source, shared with permission.

Article provided by wikiHow, a collaborative writing project to build the world's largest, highest quality how-to manual.
Special families needed!

Cats in the Cradle, Inc. is a no-kill, all-volunteer, 501(3)© non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, care and placement of feral, stray and special needs cats and kittens.

Currently we are in need of special homes for 5 kitties. These kitties are all very sweet and will make great fuzzy family members, but they do have special needs. Each of these kitties has tested positive for Feline Leukemia.

Feline Leukemia, is not a cancer, it's actually a virus that causes an immune system deficiancy. Cats with FeLV can live happy lives in the home of a caring person. It's estimated that 30% of cats who are infected will overcome the virus. Although a variety of treatments have been tried, presently there is no effective cure for Feline Leukemia. The cat should be supported with good nutrition and regular veterinary care at the first sign of any illness.

For more info on FeLV check out these links:
http://catsinthecradlerescue.org/info/FeLV.htm
http://www.felineleukemia.org
http://m.webring.com/t/Cats-Guardians-LIVING-With-Feline-Leukemia-FeLV-Feline-Immunodeficiency-Virus-FIV

If you do not have any cats, or if you already have a cat who is FeLV positive, please consider adopting one (or two!) of these adorable kitties from our organization. They desperately need homes because our facility is small and as we have to keep them seperate from the other cats they will spend the rest of their lives in a cage if no one adopts them.

There would be no adoption fee for these kitties, you'd just need to fill out a little bit of paperwork (adoption application and agreement) and take your new family member(s) home!

Please email all inquiries to adoptions@catsinthecradlerescue.org.

Onto the kitties:
Domino, Felix and Juno are triplets born on a farm in TN. The family there loved them and the children played with them and held them all the time. They wanted them to have happy homes but could not keep them. They brought them to CITC so we could find them forever homes. These sweet playful siblings would be happy to stay together, or would be happy to each find seperate homes. They are very affectionate and will quickly become a part of your family.

Domino: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10675319
Felix: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10675328
Juno: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10675298

Corrine is a beautiful tabby girl with right green eyes. She wants a home where she will be loved and have some room to play. Her life may be shorter than average due to FeLV, but that doesn't mean she has less love and energy to share with you now.

Corrine: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9800755

Demi is a loving kitty who had a hard beginning in life. She was found roaming the streets and then when she finally came to CITC and had a chance to find a happy loving home she tested positive for FeLV. Demi is a very friendly kitty who likes to be with people. She would be a bright spot in your life and you in hers if you gave her a home.

Demi: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=8877132

Sunday Adoptions Report!

Sunday was a long day at PetSmart. I was by myself for a while, and had a young girl helper for a while and L the founder helped me shut down, it just made for a long day. I hate to say that it was a good thing we weren't too busy, but it was.

We had one kitty adopted out. Her name is Velvet and she's the one I talked about who insisted that you pet her. She is a beautiful cat and I know she's gone to a great home.

Sunday was a reminder to me that we have a lot of special kitties that really need loving adoptive families who are willing to give them time to come out of their shells.

Ronnie is an orange (very light orange) and white kitty with golden brown eyes. He wants attention, but is a little afraid of people standing over him to get pets. He loves to be petted and is addicted to gooshy food. He'll be your best friend forever if you open a can of Fancy Feast!
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=7874080

JimmyMac is another orange boy, only he's mostly very orange with just some lighter colored stripes. He loves to be petted but he'll need some time in a quiet place before he will become a part of your family.
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10494754

And last but not least is my favorite orange boy, Hunter. Hunter is a big super soft lovable scaredy cat. When he comes to your home he is going to hide under the first piece of furniture he can find, but if your willing to give him some time and some space I just know he will come out of his shell and let you hold him while he purrs and kneads on your arm like he does mine.
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9841388

I get to go to the big shelter tomorrow and meet lots of new kitties!

*Updated to correct the link for Ronnie.

I made cake! Pumpkin Spice Cake

Using a suggestion from www.hungrygirl.com to use a can of pumpkin puree instead of the oil/eggs/whatever that a boxed cake mix calls for I made a yummy dessert with only 112 calories, 3g of fat, and about 8g of sugars per serving. YUMMY!!!

http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=298082

Sunday Adoptions Report!

Sunday was a good day. We adopted out 4 cats, 2 kittens and two adults.

This week I'm swamped so I'm only going to talk about 1 kitty who needs a home.

Please allow me to introduce Chess! Chess is a fun black and white boy. He's playful and talkative and loves to be petted. He hates being cooped up in the kennel when his foster mom brings him in to PetSmart for adoptions, so he complains loudly about it for a while and then relaxes and takes a nap. He likes to play with the stick with feathers on one end and does fine with the other cats. If you're looking for a lot of fun and attention from a cat please consider Chess.

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10588608

Yesterday at the GA Renaissance Festival!

Wolf and I spent all day yesterday wandering around the GA Ren Fair yesterday. We enjoyed seeing all the vendors and all the wandering performers. We took lots of pictures and even watched the Ded Bob Sho!!! The grounds of the fair here are really pretty with lots of trees and little areas to stand at with mini-tables for your drink or snack. I dressed in costume and wore my Pendragon (which laced all the way up is too big but not horribly so), a cotton chemise and the burgandy skirt TheAntiChick and Goldenbaer made me for their wedding. The chemise and skirt are way too big, but I was still happy to dress up. When we got to the fair we checked out the Royal Family Cothiers and they had a sale! I got a new skirt and chemise for a great price. The first pic is of me with Puss in Boots! There's LOTS more pics after that one so if you have a slow connection beware! Also, clicking on any of the pics will take you to my photobuckt site where you can see lots more!

Jack Sparrow!

The Greenman was amazing!

The grounds were so pretty:

There was a vendor who made metal fountain sculptures that were beautiful:

Ded BOB!
A hidden jem!

This morning I stopped to get some gas after dropping Wolf off at work. I went to a BP down the road. Recently the BP's convienence store has been turned into an AMPM and they've been advertising like crazy. I wanted some coffee (When don't I want coffee?) and so I went inside to get a cup.

I have found an amazing coffee deal! For $1.65 i got a 24oz cup, filled it 1/3 of the way up with skim milk (Yes, real skim milk! They also had 2%.) added a few skirts of Sugar Free Vanilla Syrup (That was the only sugar free flavor they had, but they had a lot of other flavors in regular.) filled up the rest of the cup with decaf coffee (Yes, I know it's pointless, but it tastes good!) and then topped it with a sprinkle of cinnamon (They also had vanilla, chocolate, nutmeg, and mini marshmallows.)!!!

All of that for $1.65 and they have a promotion going where you get a little card and after your 5th coffe or fountian drink (mix & match) purchase you get one free!

It was so yummy! They have totally won my future gas purchases.
